Securing/Encrypting Your Contents on Flash Drive
So guys. Are you super worried that your important research documents, or your final year thesis or some proprietary project related code, should not be leaked. Or you are into some serious secrecy and privacy pact, and you need to protect your data…
How are you going to secure your stuff, when you are always on the move and carry your data along with you.. What if you lose your flash.. or you get robbed.. What will happen with your data..
Since you don’t want the data falling into the wrong hands, here is a pretty neat solution. Encrypt your data!
Ok. So.. If I encrypt my data.. I will need an encryption software for that?
Sure as Hell.. you do..
How am I going to access the data if it is not my personal computer and I don’t have the software installed on the target computer?
Here is the interesting part. You are going to keep a copy of the program alongside your data in the flash drive. It will run anywhere. A portable piece of code.. That you will run.. and decrypt the contents on your flash.
So, if my flash gets stolen, people are gonna know, which software I used to encrypt my data.. Since it will be there and visible..
Ofcourse, they will know.. but they won’t know the encrypting algorithm that you used, and they won’t know the password that you used.
(Plus, you could carry another flash with you, which contains the software)
Although someone serious, who has supercomputers, decryption and hacking algorithms at their disposal (You guessed right.. NSA..) would not be deterred much longer.
Basically encryption has a direct relationship with the amount of time for the validity of data..
If you think that your data’s information is worth a day.. You could simply use old school letter swapping method. The time to decrypt such data won’t be many days..
But, If you think that your data’s worth is a month.. and in case the encrypted data gets stolen, you can come up with an alternate plan.. You would use some strong hashing algorithm.. with 2-factor authentication, with a long mixed password, that would take a lot of time for it to crack.
Plus.. Don’t believe everything that you see on tv.. You can’t just decrypt complicated algorithms by just a single click..
What software/tool do you recommend?
Give Veracrypt a try. It is a free tool, portable and comes with many sweet options… One of my favorite features is the hidden encryption method.. Your encrypted data will have a hidden partition.. One password to access your main data.. and another to access the hidden data..
It is more like an Inception.. dream within a dream.. In our case.. Encryption within an encryption..

Give it a try and feel free to ask any question.. and provide your feedback. Thanks
